About this list

How these names were picked

The build reads 2025, the newest year in the SSA file this site is built from, and takes the 9 girls' and the 9 boys' names with the most births: most births first, ties in alphabetical order — the SSA's own ranking rule. A new SSA year re-picks the list, so a name can gain or lose its page. If one name were in both lists it would get one page, counted with the sex where it ranks higher, and the other list would run on to its next name so each sex keeps 9 pages; in 2025 no name is in both lists.

The rank is among all names of that sex in 2025. Spellings are separate names: Sofia and Sophia are ranked, counted and paged apart.

Where every number comes from

US Social Security Administration, "Beyond the Top 1000 Names" national data (names.zip): one text file per year of birth, 1880 to 2025, each line a name, a sex and a number of babies. The SSA address is www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/names.zip; the file was taken from the Internet Archive's copy of that address, captured 2026-09-28 and fetched 2026-09-30. The file covers babies with a Social Security number and lists a name only when at least 5 babies of that sex got it in a year.
