Tap a column heading to sort by it; tap again to reverse. Each name opens its chart of every year since 1880 — its own page where one exists. Places is how many ranks a name moved from 2015 to 2025 (+ is up); — means it was outside the top 1,000 in one of the two years. Shape is the average babies per year in each decade, against the name's own best decade.
About the name finder
A worked example
Girls, starting with A, 4 or 5 letters, ranked 101–1,000 in 2025: 58 names. Most babies first, they begin Anna (#107, 2,521 babies, −63 places since 2015), Alaia (#117, 2,318, +547), Alina (#130) and Amira (#132, +248). Add “Rising” and Anna drops out; switch the sort to Places and Alaia comes first.
What each filter means
- Popularity is the name's rank among names of the same sex in 2025: the name with the most babies is #1, ties go alphabetically (the SSA's rule). Top 100 holds 200 rows, 100 girls' and 100 boys' names. “Below top 1,000” also asks for a minimum number of babies in 2025 (25 unless you change it), because below that the list runs to tens of thousands of names given to a handful of babies.
- Trend uses the rule the rising and falling names page prints: a name counts only if it was in the top 1,000 for its sex in both 2015 and 2025. Rising means it gained rank places, falling that it lost them, steady that its rank is the same. That leaves 347 rising, 404 falling and 5 steady girls' names (Mia, Quinn, Valeria, Joanna, Briella), and 334 rising, 453 falling and no steady boys' names. Names outside the top 1,000 in either year have no trend here.
- Peaked in is the decade of the year with the most babies of that sex. Mary's girls peaked in 1921, so Mary is a 1920s name even though she is still #125 in 2025.
- Letters are compared without regard to case; the SSA spells names in plain letters A–Z only, with no spaces, hyphens or accents.
Which names are in the list
Every name and sex pair with 5 or more babies in 2025 (that is, every name in the 2025 file) or 1,000 or more babies over all the years since 1880: 19,340 girls' and 14,735 boys' rows, 34,075 in all. 2,848 of them are names not given to 5 or more babies in 2025 that were common earlier. A name given to both sexes appears twice, once for each, with its own rank.
What this cannot do
- No meanings or origins. The SSA file holds a name, a sex and a count. This page cannot tell you what a name means, where it comes from or how it sounds, and it does not guess.
- No state data. Every number is national. A name can be common in one state and rare in the next; that is not shown here.
- Spellings count separately. Aaliyah, Aleah and Aliyah are three names, each ranked on its own; this page never adds spellings together, so a popular sound split across spellings can look less popular than it is.
- Under 5 is invisible. The SSA lists a name for a sex in a year only when 5 or more babies got it, so a name given to 4 babies is missing from that year, and totals are floors.
- US births only, babies with a Social Security number, 1880 to 2025. Counts before about 1937 under-count, because many people born then applied for a number later or never.
Where every number comes from
The SSA's national baby-name file, names.zip (ssa.gov/oact/babynames/names.zip), one text file per year of birth from 1880 to 2025. ssa.gov refuses this site's build server, so the file is the Internet Archive's copy of that address captured 28 September 2026, web.archive.org/web/20260928143357id_/ followed by that address, SHA-256 cd78e975ed7bb358e018dd62fbe14ced89295e9581c49172ca4eedcb011b3724. The latest data year is 2025. The page downloads one list built from that file (about 450 KB compressed) and filters it in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
