A name is listed only if it is inside the top 1,000 for its sex in both years, as in the SSA's own list of changes, because 5 → 50 births is not a trend.

About these tables

Rank climb or birth change: why the lists differ

Near the bottom of the top 1,000 a few hundred babies move a name hundreds of places; near the top, thousands of babies may not move it at all. So the two sorts answer different questions. From 2024 to 2025, the girls' name that climbed most by rank was Analeia, from #920 to #514 (+406 places) on a gain of 290 babies (289 → 579). The girls' name that gained the most babies was Ailany: 2,606 → 7,136 (+4,530), from #101 to #14. For boys, Theodore stayed at #4 but gained 1,286 babies (12,069 → 13,355), and Olivia stayed the top girls' name while losing 1,228 (14,772 → 13,544).

Over 10 years (2015 to 2025), boys' Theodore went from #99 to #4 and 4,155 to 13,355 babies; girls' Addilyn fell from #335 to #988, 974 to 256.

How the tables are made

For the chosen sex, every name in the SSA file for 2025 and for the earlier year (2024, 2020 or 2015) is ranked by the rule above. A name enters the tables only if its rank is 1,000 or better in both years; then “climbed most” keeps the names that gained places (or babies) and “fell most” the ones that lost them, the 50 biggest moves of each. Ties are broken by the other measure, then alphabetically. The share link keeps your choice, for example dankname.com/rising/?span=10&sex=boys&sort=births.

What this cannot do

US only. The counts are the US Social Security Administration's national file: babies born in the US with a Social Security number. No other country, and no states on this page.
Names under 5 births are not counted. The SSA lists a name for a sex in a year only when 5 or more babies got it. That is one reason for the top-1,000 floor: a name that jumped from 10 babies to 400 would not be in these tables, because it was not in the top 1,000 the year before.
Spellings are separate names. Ailany, Ailani and Aylani are three rows, each ranked on its own; the page does not add spellings together.
No reasons. The file holds a name, a sex and a count. It cannot say why a name rose or fell, and this page does not guess.
Counts, not shares. Births changes are numbers of babies. Fewer babies overall in one year can pull most names' counts down together; ranks are not affected by that.

Where every number comes from

The SSA's national baby-name file, names.zip (ssa.gov/oact/babynames/names.zip), one text file per year of birth from 1880 to 2025, taken from the Internet Archive's copy of that address captured 28 September 2026, SHA-256 cd78e975ed7bb358e018dd62fbe14ced89295e9581c49172ca4eedcb011b3724. The latest data year is 2025. One name at a time is on the name lookup; two to four on one chart at compare names.
